Library

The Institute of Medical Information (IMI) and Library of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) was developed from the former Peking Union Medical College Library founded in 1917. It been recognized as China’s most historic medical library with the largest medical literature collection and was designated as the First National Medical Library by the State Council in 1957. It has served as the MOH’s (Ministry of Health) National Center  for Medical Literature Resources Sharing Network since 1990, the WHO’s Depository Library in China since 1990, and the NSTL’s  Medical Center.



The library resources mainly include biology science and medicine and health resources. By the beginning of 2016, there were nearly 3 million books in the collection, 7,000 kinds of foreign periodicals (including more than 3,700 kinds of paper periodicals), 1,400 kinds of Chinese periodicals, 84 electronic databases and more than 10,000 copies of graduate degree papers.  Also the library has more than 1,000 ancient Chinese medicine books, more than 1000 kinds of foreign medical history monographs and 2 million copies of WHO series of publications and other resources.  In addition to the collection of a wealth of modern medical books, but also the collection of more than 1,000 ancient Chinese medicine, many of which are rare Ming Yuan dynasty, such as Yuan five years (AD 1339) re-edition of the "Supplementary Notes Huangdi Nei Jing asked"  which is the outstanding works of traditional Chinese medicine. Also the library has more than 1,000 Chinese ancient books, more than 1,000 monographs of foreign medical history and 2 million copies of WHO series of publications and other special resources.  The library also has a collection of foreign medical history books and world famous medical home biography. This is a group of rare information, become the domestic medical history research important document.

 

From the service object, as a medical sub-center of the National Science and Technology Library (NSTL), the Medical Science Library undertakes a series of activities such as medicine, Scientific and technical resources of the strategic security functions for the country more than 540 million medical and health practitioners to provide resources and services.  From the current service mode of the medical library, it has been from the traditional circulation, document delivery service to the digital environment through the network to obtain literature and information services stage.
