The Celebration Ceremony Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Founding of PUMC Held

On September 22, 2017, Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) held a celebration ceremony commemorating the centennial anniversary of its founding. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Vice Premier Liu Yandong sent important message to the ceremony. The national leaders attended and made addresses at the ceremony included Chen Zhu, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.


Premier Li Keqiang pointed out in his written message that PUMC, over the past 100 years, has been adhering to the concepts of “Rigor, Erudition & Expertise, Creation and Devotion” and pursuing excellence, quality and high standard of education, gaining fruitful results in medical education and medical scientific research and making groundbreaking contributions to the modern medical development in China. He hoped that PUMC continues to put into practice the guiding principles of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech made at the National Conference on Health, always follows the people-centered guideline, deepens reform and innovation, fully leverages its comparative advantages, strengthens international cooperation, strives to train more outstanding medical talents, tackle medical chanllenges and makes new contributions to better serving the general public and building a healthy China. Liu Yandong hoped in her written instruction that PUMC intensively studies and implements the guiding principles of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speeches, adheres to the Party’s principles on education and healthcare, carries forward great heritage and practice, works hard to build world-class disciplines, trains more qualitied medical talents with both moral integrity and professional competency, promotes coordinated development of medical education and medical research, and makes new and greater contributions to deepening the medical reform, building a healthy China, achieving the Two Centenary Goals and realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Chen Zhu put forward the following three requirements on the PUMC in his speech: 1. Intensify the efforts to train urgently-needed talents including general practitioners for the purpose of meeting the needs for people’s health; 2. Carry forward the heritage of the PUMC in the new period under the guidance of the principles on health; 3. Give full play to the advantages of foreign exchanges and cooperation and contribute Chinese wisdom to global health governance.

Xuetao Cao, President of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College (CAMS&PUMC), on behalf of all the teachers and students of CAMS&PUMC, said that the written instructions and speeches made by the leaders have indicated the future direction for the development of PUMC and put forward new requirements. He urged the teachers and students to earnestly implement the guiding principle of the leaders’ instructions and speeches and take specific actions, continue to deepen reform, forge ahead with determination, carry forward heritage, strive for excellence, make innovations, live up to the great liability of the nation and expectations of the people, and make new contributions to building a healthy China.


At the ceremony, 20 faculty members of the PUMC were given certificates of honor including “First-grade Professor”, “Lifetime Achievement Award for Medical Education” and “Award for Outstanding Contributions”.


Entrusted by National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) Minister Bin Li, NHFPC Vice Minister Xiaowei Ma and Vice Minister Yixin Zeng attended the ceremony. Over 2,000 persons attended the ceremony, including leaders of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, China Food and Drug Administration and State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, as well as leaders of colleges and universities, experts, foreign friends and alumni at home and abroad and teacher and student representatives.
