Vice Minister of Science and Technology Nanping Xu Visits CAMS&PUMC


On the afternoon of March 8, 2017, Nanping Xu, Vice Minister of Science and Technology (MOST) led a team to CAMS&PUMC to investigate progress in technological innovations in the medical and healthcare sector, the building of national labs and the national clinical center. Accompanying Xu were Director-general Yuanbin Wu, Deputy Director-general Baoguo Tian, and Division Chief Zhaofeng Zhang of the MOST Department of S&T for Social Development. President Xuetao Cao, Party Secretary Guoqin Li, Deputy Party Secretary Longshan Yao, Vice President Zhongwei Zheng, Deputy Party Secretary Yunfeng Wang, and some other relevant staff members of PUMC and PUMC Hospital attended the meeting. 

Vice Minister Xu gave full recognition to CAMS&PUMC’s contributions to the development of medicine and healthcare in China. He said that science and technology for medical and healthcare development was now facing various problems and challenges and CAMS&PUMC shall continue to shoulder its responsibilities and obligations and make more contributions at the national level to the medical research relevant to the well-being of Chinese people.

During the meeting, Vice Minister Xu gave instructions for CAMS&PUMC’s efforts to promote science and technology development in the healthcare sector and proposed three requirements: First, great importance should be attached to the basics and to the improvement of supporting facilities; and priority should be given to major technological research projects for the Healthy China 2030 Program so as to enhance the overall level of medical services in China. Second, focus should be put on clinical medicine and a thorough survey shall be done for the Healthy China 2030 Program with standard formulation as the top priority. Third, concrete results should be pursued through major breakthroughs in the scientific research so as to produce a number of effective and highly useful technologies that can be promoted at the lower levels to benefit the majority of the people.


On behalf of CAMS&PUMC, President Xuetao Cao welcomed Vice Minister Xu and his party and thanked the MOST for its long-lasting support to CAMS&PUMC’s research efforts. Then, he gave a report on CAMS&PUMC’s work by introducing the contributions in history, current status and achievements made, and future plans. He said that CAMS&PUMC would take a foothold on the national level, have a global perspective, and make dedicated efforts to strengthen research work, improve teaching, and provide medical services of top quality. During the 13thFive-year Plan period, CAMS&PUMC will strive to promote teaching through medical service delivery, enhance its medical services with better research efforts, and support research work with improved teaching, creating a world-leading modern medical research institution that combines medical services, medical teaching, research, production, and disease prevention. President Cao also reported some existing problems in regard to medical science development, and raised proposals that we should keep a sound inventory, promote early diagnosis and treatment, focus more on the difficult cases, and develop special drugs, devices, and procedures.

Party Secretary Guoqin Li said that CAMS&PUMC had the responsibility, confidence, ability, obligation, and willingness to respond to calls from the central government concerning top-level designs, do more to complete major national technology and health research projects, and strive to conquer major diseases affecting the health of the general public, making our contributions as medical researchers. 

During the visit, Vice Minister Xu and his party went to the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences to visit the National Key Laboratory of Molecular Biology, heard a report on research progress, and learned about the development of medical and healthcare technologies and their industrial applications. At a meeting with relevant people, he also solicited opinions from Professor Shengshou Hu, Director of Fuwai Hospital and National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases; Professor Jie He, Director of the Cancer Hospital and National Cancer Center of China; and Professor Qi Yu, Director of National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecological Diseases in regard to the research on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and gynecological cancer as well as the development of relevant national clinical research centers.
