The 2018 Young Scientists Award Ceremony of CAMS and Institut Mérieux Held in Beijing

On April 10, 2019, the 2018 Young Scientists Award Ceremony of CAMS and Institut Mérieux was held in Beijing. The meeting brought together more than 130 people including Chen Wang, President of CAMS & PUMC; Ms. Qizhi Liao, Chief Representative of Institut Mérieux in China; young scientists and technicians attending the 3rd CAMS & PUMC Young Investigator Forum of Medical Innovation, and research and managerial personnel of institutes and hospitals. Director Jianwei Wang of the Department of Research Administration under CAMS & PUMC presided over the meeting.

 

Ms. Qizhi Liao first delivered a speech, introducing the basic situation of Institut Mérieux and the relevant background for the establishment of this award. She pointed out that Institut Mérieux and CAMS have established a joint laboratory for identification of new pathogens since 2005. The two sides have achieved remarkable research results since their cooperation. The Institut Mérieux has looked forward to further deepening cooperation with the CAMS to jointly solve major medical and health problems. Ms. Qizhi Liao affirmed the academic achievements of winners and encouraged them to take their awards as a motive force to reach new high.

 

 

 

In his speech, Chen Wang, President of CAMS & PUMC, congratulated two winners, Research Fellow Lili Ren of the Institute of Pathogen Biology and Research Fellow Haiyu Hu of the Institute of Materia Medica. He fully affirmed the Young Scientists Award of CAMS and Institut Mérieux co-founded by CAMS and Institut Mérieux with the funds of Institut Mérieux, and highly praised the cooperation between Institut Mérieux and CAMS & PUMC. President Wang pointed out that CAMS & PUMC is shouldering the important task of building the core base of China's innovation system for medical science and technology. Young sci-tech workers are the new force in the development of CAMS & PUMC’s science and technology undertakings. He encouraged the winners and the majority of young scientists and technicians to carry forward the glorious traditions, assume the responsibility of the times, devote their young strength, make their due contribution to moving faster to build CAMS & PUMC into the core base of China’s national innovation system for medical science and technology, and create glorious achievements for the great era.

 

 

 

At the award ceremony, Mr. Wang and Ms. Qizhi Liao presented medals and certificates to the winners, Research Fellow Lili Ren and Haiyu Hu.

 

 

 

The Young Scientists Award aims to strengthen the cooperation between Institut Mérieux and CAMS & PUMC and motivate CAMS’s outstanding young sci-tech workers who are engaged in basic medicine, clinical medicine, disease control and other related research in the fields of microbiology and infection. Each year, one award is granted with a bonus of 10,000 euros. CAMS & PUMC recommend three candidates and Institut Mérieux’s Award Committee selects one or two winners. Since the award was established in 2016, four people have won the award. The award direction in 2018 was the pathogen research of infectious diseases.
