State Key Laboratory of Bioactive Substance and Function of Natural Medicines

The State Key Laboratory of Bioactive Substance and Function of Natural Medicines was founded in 2011. Over the past five years, the lab has been dedicated to the research of bioactive substances and function of natural medicines and to serve the need of new drugs development in China. To fulfill this goal, the lab focuses on the discovery of bioactive substances of natural medicines, the druggability of the bioactive substances and related technologies and methodologies, particularly in treating or preventing cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The lab also provides a scientific basis and technical support of the development and modernization of traditional medicine for the prevention and treatment of major diseases for the domestic and global communities.



The laboratory faculty is consisted of many talents, including one academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 4 receivers of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 professors from Changjiang Scholars Program, 6 from the New Century Bai-Qian-Wan Talented Personnel Project, 2 from the national Thousand Talents Project and 2 are receivers of National Outstanding Youth Fund. More than 30 staff members serve in domestic and foreign academic organizations or on the board of academic publications. Over the past 5 years, the lab has undertaken a number of important research tasks for the 863 Program, Ministry of Science and Technology, and NSFC, and published 858 papers in international journals, of which 619 were published in SCI journals, includingNat Commun., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., PNAS, Hepatology, Autophagy, and so on. The lab also won one first prize and one second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award,, 5 provincial awards, a new drug certificate, and 10 translational scientific research achievements.


The laboratory currently occupies an area of 16,000 square meters, serving a sound platform for 5 laboratories. Adhering to the principle of "openness, cooperation, competitiveness", the lab is to carry out close exchanges and cooperative research with domestic and international peer organizations.



Within 5 years, the lab has trained 279 graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral students, among whom, 46 received national scholarships, 21 received the title of outstanding graduates of Beijing, and many were honored with PUMC Outstanding Graduate, PUMC Graduate Innovation Fund, PUMC Medical Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award, and Commendation of PUMC Medical Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award.
