State Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease (SKLCD)

State Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease (SKLCD) was proposed and approved in 2011 by the Ministry of Science and Technology; it passed the evaluation in 2013 and became the first key state lab and an important open research base focused on the basic and translational science in cardiovascular disease and medical science. The lab is affiliated with the national center for CVD—Fu Wai Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

State Key Laboratory of Cardiovascular Disease fully leverages the rich basic research and clinical advantages of the world's largest cardiac center to carry out series of basic research and clinical applications. SKLCD focuses on two main studies: atherosclerosis and myocardial remodeling. Guided by the translational medicine theory with focus on the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease and new prevention strategies, SKLCD strives to attain innovation and breakthroughs in identifying molecular pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases as well as approaches for early warning, prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Under the guiding philosophy of creative talents, innovative thinking, innovative technology, and innovative mechanism, SKLCD aims to become the cradle of top scientists in the clinical and basic research fields of cardiovascular medicine and to gain leading position in this field home and abroad. SKLCD currently has 74 permanent staff, among whom, 57 own senior professional title and 39 are doctoral supervisors; 23 principal researchers are under the age of 40, accounting for 31.08% of the entire SKLCD staff. During the development between 2011-2015, SKLCD recruited additional professional staff, including one academician, one from an innovation team qualified by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 3 winners of NSFC Outstanding Youth Fund, 2 from Beijing Science and Technology Emerging Talents, 2 Beijing Outstanding Talents, 3 from PUMC innovation team, 4 PUMC guest professors , and 5 PUMC Rising Talents.

SKLCD has undertaken many key national projects from 973 Program, 863 Program, National Science and Technology Major Projects, National Science and Technology Support Program, National Natural Science Foundation and Special Basic Work of Science and Technology, etc. These series of studies also result in papers published in top international journals, such asLancet,Nat Genet,Circulation,JACCandEur Heart J, and won 34 awards from various national organizations, Beijing Municipal Government, and the Chinese Medical Association.

Operated under an "open, dynamic, collaborative, competitive" mechanism, SKLCD carries out extensive and inter-disciplinary exchanges and cooperation with peer organizations home and abroad, building a top-level research platform and creating a strong research and learning environment. SKLCD strives to develop into a competitive world-class cardiovascular medical research center, aiming to strengthen and promote scientific research and development in cardiovascular disease prevention in China.
