Professor Yupei Zhao is Director of PUMC Hospital and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, professor and doctoral supervisor of Surgery, entitled to Special Allowance of the State Council. He is an alternate member of the 18thCPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of Central Healthcare Committee. He also serves as Vice Chairman of China Association for Science and Technology, Vice Chairman of Chinese Medical Association, Chairman of Chinese Society of Surgery and Head of Chinese Pancreatic Surgery Group, Editor-in-chief of Chinese Journal of Surgery, Editor-in-chief of Annals of Surgery (Chinese Version) and honorary editor-in-chief of more than 10 journals on surgery. He also holds Honorary Fellowship in Int’l College of Surgeons, American Academy of Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons and Hong Kong College or Surgeons and Fellowship Ad Hominem in Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh; he is at the same time the Vice Chairman of Int’l Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Association and Chairman of the 16thAsian Society for Surgery.

Engaged in clinical practices in general surgery for more than 30 years, Professor Zhao had made a lot of new progresses in surgical fields such as operations on liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, intestines and thyroid, especially in the realm of pancreatic diseases. He played the leading role in to setting forth the guide on diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer of Chinese Medical Association and national industrial standard of the Ministry of Health about diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer, and guiding 16 pancreatic surgery centers around the nation to launch prospective clinical researches as to significant problems in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer and build up a nationwide technology platform for diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. He assumed responsibilities for more than 20 national and provincial scientific research projects, including the 11thFive-year Program Support Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology, published more than 300 papers, served as chief editor or translator for eight monographs, and trained over 100 masters, doctors and post-doctoral students.

He won the second place in National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first place in Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award, the first place in Chinese Medical Science and Scientific and Technological Progress Award by Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation. The book Pancreatology in which he served as editor-in-chief was included in Top-level Original Books Publication Project by GAPP. He was also granted the first Zhou Guangzhao Clinician Award, Chinese Physician Award, Middle-aged and Young Experts of Outstanding Contributions by the Ministry of Health, Beijing Model Doctor, Beijing Model Teacher and National Outstanding Worker Medal.
