In 1950 he graduated from Medical College of Tongji University in Shanghai.

In 1961, he graduated from Experimental and Clinical Tumor Institute of the Soviet Academy of Medical Sciences with a doctoral degree in medical sciences.

In 1974, he started to work as director of cell biology lab of Institute of Oncology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

In 1988.12, he started to work as director of State Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology Cancer Institute; and in 1980 he was elected as academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

He was also deputy director of Biology Division of Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of Life Science Division of Natural Science Foundation of China, deputy secretary general and deputy director general of Genetics Society of China and chairman of Chinese Society of Genetic Medicine.

He mainly engages in research on cell biology, cell genetics and oncology as one of the founders of medical genetics in China. He opened up a new field of human cell genetics in China and organize the first medical cell genetics research team. He was also the first to carry out antenatal diagnosis on congenital malformation. “The establishment, development and major achievements of human and mammal cell genetics”, which was presided by him won the second prize of State Science and Technology Advancement Award. “The establishment of the external malignant transformation system of human fibroblast and epithelial cell and its application in carcinogenesis and canceration research” won grade-B prize of Major Medicine and Health Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Ministry of Health. “Detection of susceptible group in high-incidence area of esophageal cancer and strategy to carry out prevention of scale” won the third prize of Medicine and Health Science and Technology Advancement Award of the Ministry of Health. Working with Professor Huilin Lu, he fully elaborated on the history, merits and faults of eugenics and promoted the positive aspects of it, stimulating the development of medical genetics in China.
