Professor Boqin Qiang was born in Sept. 1939, now a researcher of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences of CAMS, professor and doctoral supervisor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Foundation School of PUMC and academician of CAS.

He used to be a member of the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth CPPCC National Committee, Vice Chairman of CAMS, Vice President of PUMC (from 1994 to 1999), Director of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (from 1993 to 2007) and Deputy Director of National Key Laboratory for Medical Molecular Biology (from 1993 to 2004), and he now serves part time as Director of the Academic Committee of National Key Laboratory for Medical Molecular Biology.

He graduated from the Department of Medical Science in Shanghai Second Medical College in 1962 and started to work at the Department of Biochemistry in the Institute of Experimental Medicine (the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences today) after graduation. He used to serve at the Molecular Biology Laboratory of New England Biolabs and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University of Chicago as visiting scholar. In 1991, he was admitted as a department member of CAS (later renamed academician); he used to be a member of the Expert Committee for Biotechnology in National 863 Program (from 1994 to 2006) and Chief Scientist for Biology (from 1996 to 2000), Director of Life Science Department of National Natural Science Foundation of China (from 1996 to 2000); he also serves part time as an expert of the Advisory Group for 973 Program of the State Ministry of Science and Technology (from 2004 till today).

He serves as Executive Director of the Chinese Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Chinese Medical Association, Honorary Director of Chinese Society of Biotechnology, and Deputy Editor-in-chief of Acta Academiae Medicinae Sinicae and Progress in Biochemistry and Biophysics; also, he used to be Director of HUGO and Director of HUGO Pacific, and editorial board member of int’l journals like Journal of Molecular Medicine.

He’s been conducting nucleic acid researches since 1960s. He used to serve as Leader of the Comprehensive Expert Team to join in the organization and coordination for implementing the Key Project “Functional Genome and Biochip” of National 10thFive-year Program. He has had more than 100 SCI-indexed papers published and used to win one Grade-A Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Health, two first places in Chinese Medical Science and Technology Progress Award and one second place in National Science and Technology Progress Award. While completing tasks of scientific research, he cooperated with other doctoral supervisors in his lab to train doctors and masters of science and doctors of medicine, amounting to nearly 100.
