Shepu Xue

Ph.D

Academician

Chinese Academy of Sciences

Born in Sept. 1917, Professor Shepu Xue is a cell biologist, professor and doctoral supervisor, elected to be department member (academician later) of CAS in 1991.

He graduated from the Department of Natural History of Chongqing Central University in 1943, obtained his Master’s Degree in the Department of Biology in 1947 and was granted PhD of Science in the University of Washington in 1951. He used to serve as a researcher in the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences and Director of Cell Biology Office. Prof. Shepu Xue provided important theoretical basis for the law of cellular differentiation and its adjustability, finding there’s preganglionic sympathetic nervous system for miscarriage in cervical spinal cord in chicken embryo, which can be differentiated after transplanted to a favorable microenvironment. He also made significant contributions in pioneering researches like spermatogenesis of reproductive biology and action mechanism, drug metabolism, toxicity and toxicology, genetic effect and isotope labeling of China’s birth control pill gossypol. He initiated cytoplast hybridization model that integrates naturally denucleated reticulocyte with myeloma cell; by analyzing exogenous gene introduction of reticulocyte and the effect of purified active protein on cancer cell, it’s found for the first time that the erythrocyte cytoplasm of mammalian contains adjustable genetic expression in erythrocyte of significance for evolution and EDDF that will induce terminal differentiation and reverse malignant division of cancer cell, thus revealing the secret of natural denucleation of erythrocyte in the mammal and the dual-phase phenomenon of denucleation. He also cloned the full-length gene sequence of relevant factors during the period of terminal differentiation at different stages, and summarized pyknosis theory from functions of relevant factors and the new concept of cancer treatment applied to prevent malignant division of cancer cell.

Prof. Shepu Xue used to win ministerial scientific research awards and four second places in Science and Technology Progress Award. He had more than 200 papers and seven monographs published, now serving as Honorary Chairman of Chinese Society for Anatomical Sciences and Director of Int’l Morphology and Anatomy Science Society.
